Feeding for laminitis

With so many feeds and supplements on the equestrian market, it can be difficult to decide which is best for your horse, let alone which two might work best in combination with each other.

When feeding for laminitis, you want to look at the products with the lower sugar and

starch levels.

Did you know Speedi-Beet is only 5% sugar and 0% starch? That makes Speedi-Beet one of the lowest combined sugar and starch fibres available, so you can feed with confidence!

Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is a highly nutritious beet pulp feed which soaks in just ten minutes. It is made using only the best quality British Beet Pulp and is subjected to a patented cooking process to produce a unique feed which is unlike any other HorseBeet.

With zero starch and only 5% sugar, Speedi-Beet is safe to feed to your laminitic horse or pony. Speedi-Beet is a great source of non-heating slow-release energy as its fibre is more easily digested than that found in forage e.g. hay. This is because there’s a high proportion of soluble fibre, mostly pectins. Speedi-Beet is suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis!

We know that managing the weight of a laminitic pony can also be a challenge. The good news is that Speedi-Beet expands x 5 the size and therefore once soaked the calories are diluted. Not only that, feeding Speedi-Beet before turnout can prevent your horse from gorging on that sweet spring grass as they have a “fuller for longer” feeling.

Do I need to feed a supplement for my laminitic horse/pony?

Supplements are not always necessary for every scenario, however The Golden Paste Company have carried out recent investigations with Dr Tom Shurlock on how Turmeric could be suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.

Given that laminitis is essentially damage and inflammation of the tissue between the hoof and the underlying coffin bone, it makes perfect sense that TurmerAid™ is ideal support that can be fed safely to laminitics as part of a high fibre low sugar and starch diet, paired with Speedi-Beet.

Why? Well, Curcumin, the main active ingredient and one of over 200 components in Turmeric, supports the horse’s natural anti-inflammatory processes and supports joint health. The Golden Paste Company’s TurmerAid™ is a pelleted Turmeric supplement which is easy to feed and highly palatable, making it suitable for even the fussiest horses.
