You don’t need a professional photoshoot to make your horse look more polished online.
A few simple changes before you pick up the camera can make a huge difference to how your horse is presented online.

Same horse. Same day. The horse hasn’t changed — only the preparation.

The 5-minute photo checklist
Before taking your conformation photos, work through these simple steps.

Start with the basics. Brush the mane onto the correct side and brush through the tail so the horse looks tidy and well presented.
These small details help create a cleaner outline and a more polished first impression.

Freshly oiled hooves help complete the overall picture and make a conformation photo feel smarter.
It only takes a moment, but it makes the horse look better prepared for their advert.

The horse should be the focus of the photograph, not the headcollar.
Use a smart, correctly fitting headcollar or bridle to give the image a cleaner, more professional look.

Once the horse is ready, think about where you are taking the photo.
A simple, uncluttered background helps the horse stand out and avoids distracting the buyer. Try to avoid lorries, wheelbarrows, feed bins, other horses, dogs or people in the background.

Buyers need to see the horse clearly. Try to stand the horse so all four limbs are visible and the horse is standing naturally.
This makes it much easier for buyers to assess the horse’s conformation from the photo.

Have someone stand behind the photographer to help catch the horse’s attention.
Alert ears and a bright expression help the horse look happy, interested and engaging.
Before you take the photo...
✓ Mane brushed onto the correct side
✓ Tail brushed through
✓ Hoof oil applied
✓ Smart headcollar or bridle
✓ Clean, contrasting background
✓ All four limbs visible
✓ Ears forward and alert
Then take your photograph.
Better photos can help your advert make a stronger first impression and encourage more buyers to click, read and enquire.
